HONG KONG--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Global market research company Euromonitor International released today the bTop 100 City Destinations 2018b ranking report, coveringB the worldbs leading cities ranked by international tourist arrivals.
The ranking shows that six out of the top 10 most visited cities in 2017 are in Asia. Hong Kong and Bangkok are the top two performers and with Singapore, Macau, Kuala Lumpur and Shenzhen in the global top 10.
Euromonitor International Travel Research Consultant Wouter Geerts comments, bAsia continues its rise, accounting for 41 out of the top 100 cities globally in 2018, in comparison to 37 cities in 2012. Cities in Japan and India stand out for their strong growth in international arrivals.b
Euromonitor Internationalbs travel forecasts indicate that China will become the leading world destination by 2030 with two cities among the top 10 most visited city destinations in the world in 2017.
Hong Kong
Hong Kong is the most obvious beneficiary of the Chinese outbound boom as 68 percent of all international arrivals into Hong Kong are expected to come from mainland China in 2018.
Shenzhen
The tenth most visited city globally benefits from strong connections to Hong Kong and other cities in this Delta metropolis. Despite three percent growth in international arrivals in 2018, the city is expected to drop one position and leave the top 10 global ranking this year.
Geerts concludes, bAround 80 percent of all international trips in Asia Pacific stem from Chinabs region and it is likely to increase if the China-US relations worsen. If the US-China trade war escalates, we expect a decline of 1.15 million trips in the outbound growth from China in 2019, corresponding to a reduction of about USD1.8 billion in outbound spending. The countries to be hit the hardest by this reduction would be Thailand, Hong Kong and Japan.b
